I'm excited to get started on this Book Study! The Wizard of Oz is a huge part of American culture, but very few people have actually read the novel! This is going to be a great time for you to read a new book! If you are familiar with the movie I'm sure you are going to see some similarities or differences between the two! I can't wait to hear some of the things you notice! Below you will find an introduction and video read-aloud of the first chapter of the book. I'm also linking a short Comprehension Quiz that you can take to test yourself on what you remembered from the first chapter! (Don't worry this quiz is just for fun!) I would love to hear what you think about the first chapter! Feel free to leave a comment below!
Here is a link to the online practice quiz on Kahoot!
If you would like to have your own virtual copy of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz you can access it here.
Last of all, we are going to be learning some new vocabulary words! Here are your vocabulary words for Chapter 1!
~blister (verb)- for paint or a similar coating to raise and bubble
"Once the house had been painted, but the sun blistered the paint and the rains washed it away, and now the house was as dull and gray as everything else."
~gaunt (adjective)- very thin and bony; lanky, lean, scrawny
"When Aunt Em came there to live she was a young, pretty wife. The sun nd wind had changed her, too. They had taken the sparkle from her eyes and left them a sober gray; they hadn't taken the red from her cheeks and lips, and they were gray also. She was thin and gaunt, and never smiled now."
Your challenge is to use these words sometime this week!!!
